OpenDMA Platform

A standardized integration layer for accessing enterprise content across heterogeneous ECM systems — designed for modern AI and data-driven architectures.

What is OpenDMA

OpenDMA is an open standard for accessing and integrating content stored in enterprise content management (ECM) systems.

It provides a consistent, vendor-neutral API that abstracts the proprietary interfaces of different ECM platforms, enabling unified access to documents, metadata, and related structures.

Originally initiated in 2008, OpenDMA has been continuously evolved and is now specifically designed to support modern AI, RAG, and agent-based architectures.

Why OpenDMA Matters Today

Enterprise organizations are increasingly adopting AI technologies such as large language models, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), and intelligent agents.

However, the majority of enterprise knowledge remains stored in ECM systems that were not designed to integrate with these technologies.

In practice, this challenge is compounded by the fact that many enterprises operate multiple ECM systems — for example, SharePoint for collaboration, OnBase for records management, and CMOD for archival storage. These systems operate in isolation, making it difficult to access and combine information across repositories.

As a result, direct integration into modern AI architectures becomes highly complex due to:

  • Proprietary and inconsistent APIs across ECM systems
  • Complex document models (e.g. compound documents)
  • Advanced security models such as attribute-based access control
  • Annotations, renditions, and versioning

OpenDMA addresses these challenges by providing a unified abstraction layer and a federated access model, enabling consistent and secure access to enterprise content across all connected systems.

Architecture Overview

The OpenDMA platform is built as a layered architecture that separates client applications from underlying ECM systems.

At its core, OpenDMA defines a standardized API and data model that is implemented by adapters for specific ECM platforms.

  • Core API: Defines a consistent interface for accessing content and metadata
  • Adaptors: Provide integration with specific ECM systems such as FileNet, Documentum, and Alfresco
  • Service Layer: Enables integration into enterprise applications and data pipelines
  • Client Applications: AI systems, RAG pipelines, and custom enterprise solutions

This architecture allows organizations to decouple application logic from ECM-specific implementations.

Key Capabilities

  • Unified Content Access: Access documents and metadata across multiple ECM systems through a single API
  • Security Integration: Preserve and enforce existing access control models
  • Support for Complex Content: Handle compound documents, annotations, and versioning
  • Extensibility: Adapt to custom data models and enterprise requirements
  • Open Standard: Vendor-neutral and designed for long-term interoperability
  • Federated Access: Combine and access content across multiple ECM repositories through a unified interface

Integration with AI Systems

The OpenDMA platform is specifically designed to enable integration with modern AI architectures.

It allows enterprise content stored in ECM systems to be used in:

  • Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) pipelines
  • Knowledge assistants and enterprise search solutions
  • Agent-based automation workflows
  • Data extraction and classification systems

By providing structured and secure access to content, OpenDMA ensures that AI systems operate on accurate and up-to-date enterprise information.

Open Source and Commercial Offerings

The OpenDMA standard is developed as an open source project.

Xaldon provides enterprise-grade implementations, adaptors, and commercial extensions on top of this standard.

This combination allows organizations to benefit from an open ecosystem while relying on supported and production-ready components.

Works with Your Existing ECM Systems

OpenDMA is designed to integrate with existing ECM platforms without requiring migration or replacement.

It has been designed with real-world experience across systems such as FileNet, Documentum, Alfresco, and others.

This allows organizations to modernize their content infrastructure while preserving existing investments.
