The following description reflects the original concept and functionality of the service at the time.

This library implements those services that are addressed by the SharePoint integration in Microsoft Office.

These features are supported in Microsoft Office:

• Embed a server provided HTML UI in Office file dialogs
• Server provided HTML dialog as replacement for the File Properties dialog
• Open and Save files directly on the Server
• Access to version history in Office
• Document Workspace on the right side containing lists of users, events, hyperlinks and documents
• Manually Check-Out and Check-In documents

Microsoft Outlook:

• Connect list of Contacts, Events and Tasks
• The items of these lists are stored in the local data file for offline use
• Outlook synchronizes lists automatically
  
• Synchronize document library into Outlook
• Modify documents offline and merge them later

Microsoft Windows:

• Browse folder structure in "web folders" explorer integration on Windows XP
• Full WebDAV support from Windows Vista on: Map your server to a drive letter like any other network share
• From Windows 7 on, the graphical HTML UI is available in the system default dialog

Office for Mac:

• Open files by URL in Office applications
• Save changes directly back to the server

Mac OS-X:

• Mount directory structure as WebDAV volume
